Microbiologist

1. Sample Collection and Processing

  • Supervise the collection of biological samples such as blood, urine, sputum, stool, cerebrospinal fluid, and tissue.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of samples to maintain integrity.

2. Microbial Identification and Diagnosis

  • Perform culture and sensitivity testing to identify bacterial infections and determine antibiotic susceptibility.
  • Conduct microscopic examinations using Gram staining, acid-fast staining, and other staining techniques.
  • Utilize molecular diagnostic techniques (e.g., PCR, RT-PCR) for detecting viruses like COVID-19, influenza, or HPV.
  • Perform serological tests (e.g., ELISA, rapid antigen tests) to detect microbial antigens and antibodies.

3. Infection Control and Public Health

  • Monitor and report cases of infectious diseases to public health authorities.
  • Advise on infection control measures to prevent hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
  • Implement biosafety protocols to handle infectious materials safely.

4. Quality Control and Laboratory Management

  • Ensure laboratory procedures comply with international quality standards (ISO, NABL, CAP).
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment for accurate test results.
  • Document and validate test results before reporting to physicians.

5. Research and Development

  • Develop and evaluate new diagnostic methods to improve disease detection.
  • Stay updated with advancements in microbiology and laboratory technology.
  • Participate in clinical trials or epidemiological studies.

6. Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with pathologists, physicians, and laboratory technicians to interpret results.
  • Provide guidance on appropriate antimicrobial therapy based on susceptibility reports.
  • Educate healthcare workers on microbiology-related topics, including emerging infections and resistance trends.
